A Closer Look: How to Build a Family Tree with Affinite

Building a family tree has never felt this connected, visual, and personal. With Affinite, the modern family hub, you can go beyond names and dates—you get to socializecustomize, and connect with both close and distant relatives while visually mapping your entire family lineage.

Whether you're the family historian or just getting started, this guide will walk you through how to build your own family tree using Affinite’s intuitive interface and powerful features.

Getting Started: Your Family Tree Overview

Once you're logged into your account, your family tree will center around you. You'll have a root node, and from there, everything branches out—parents, siblings, grandparents, children, nieces, nephews, and more.

Each person on the tree appears as a circular node, and the color of the node lets you know something important:

  • 🔵 Blue Nodes = Real family members who’ve created an Affinite account
  • 🔴 Red Nodes = Placeholder or “fake” members added by you or another user (they can later be claimed and converted to real accounts)

This allows the tree to grow collaboratively and accurately—think of it like Wikipedia, but for your family lineage.

Step 1: Adding Family Members

Start building your tree by clicking on any existing family node (your own or someone else’s) and choose:

  • Add Parent
  • Add Child

A form will appear prompting you to select the relationship (e.g., "Father", "Mother") and the parent type (e.g., "Biological", "Step", "Adoptive"). You can fill in details such as:

  • First & last name
  • Date of birth
  • Username
  • Profile photo (optional)

This is a great way to build the structure before inviting your family to join.

Step 2: Customizing Member Profiles

Each node in your tree can be enhanced with detailed information like:

  • Hobbies
  • Favorite foods
  • Location
  • Job positions

This transforms your tree from a genealogy diagram into a rich social network—built just for your family.

Step 3: Managing Family Tree Connections

Sometimes family members might add others who don’t belong on your tree. No problem. Just click on the node in question and mark them as "Not Related" — they'll be removed from your view, keeping your tree clean and relevant.

Likewise, if another family member adds a new real account, and that person is related to someone in your branch, they will automatically appear in your extended family tree. This keeps everything synchronized as your family grows.

Step 4: Using Filters to Find Family

Affinite isn’t just about structure—it’s about connection. You can filter your family tree using smart criteria:

  • Location – Planning a local family BBQ? Find who lives nearby.
  • Hobbies – Want to invite family members who like hiking or cooking? Easy.
  • Favorite Food – Hosting Thanksgiving? See who’s into vegan dishes vs. turkey.
  • Job Position – Looking for career advice or a job referral? Filter by profession to find family already in the field.

This makes Affinite not just a genealogy tool, but a living, breathing social network for your family’s daily life.

Bonus Tip: Use the “Direct Family” Toggle

Want to view only the people you personally added? Click the “Direct Family Only” toggle. It’s helpful when your extended tree becomes large and you want to focus on your closest relations.

Build. Connect. Belong.

Affinite isn’t just another family tree app. It’s the digital home where your family lives, talks, plans, and plays. With features like Affinite MessagingEvents, and even Affinite Trivia—a fun quiz game where you can test your knowledge of your family and compete for the highest score—it’s a platform designed to build real family bonds in the digital age.

Start building your tree today, and experience what it’s like to have your entire family at your fingertips—both online and offline.
